Abstract

This exploratory, study on the perspectives of academic managers on educational leadership aimed to inclusively describe their leadership concepts and practices. The academic managers were categorized into three major areas, namely; line academic managers (department unit heads). functional or start academic managers (college secretaries, associate deans. directors. vice-chancellors), and middle academic managers (college deans). These academic mangers Academic managers, 67% of the population, in the University of the Philippines Los Banos define leadership as service. The leadership experience accounts from a minimum 12 years of work in the university as well as attaining highest graduate studies in a foreign or local higher education institution. This servant leader manifests leadership styles with orientations on task leadership. team leadership. and democratic leadership. The trans and skills of the so-called servant leaders are being empathic. analytical, participative, consensus, consultative, and practice a two-way proce» of communication. The outstanding traits of academic managers in all levels arc openness. patience. and perseverance. the most notable and relevant attributes of all academic managers in the university are their personal integrity and personal vision The least attributes of functional, staff and middle academic managers are the leaders' intuition and their abilities to simplify situations. On the other hand, the line academic managers recognize abilities on simplifying situations as very significant attribute of a leader. Compared with line academic managers. the functional and middle managers acknowledge communication as a significant attribute. Academic managers in the university can also be described as translomutional leaders. Transformational leaders are characterized as leaders who identify and articulate vision, foster the acceptance of group goals, convey high performance expectations. provide intellectual stimulation. and individualized support. Successes in leadership experience are measured by the academic managers in terms of their accomplishments and being high achievers themselves. On the other hand. the areas where educational leaders become a failure include loosing track or direction of the vision, being self-centered. non-perfUnning. and being out of touch of the unit. The entrepreneurial orientation of the academic leadership culture describes an environment of adaptive leadership. The academic leader guides, enables, supports task achievement, and articulate individual to organizational vision. The success of leadership pc-din-mance derives from the authority and control of the leaders. The academic managers' leadership and management professional experiences are through education and reflection on experience. The academic managers of the university. according to their perception. are transformational and democratic leaders in an environment where enterprise leadership is the accepted culture.
