Abstract
The study surveys the different prioritization techniques that are commonly used by many research institutions involved in planning and prioritizing agricultural research. Specifically, it highlights the use of the yield gap method and the normalized yield losses associated to given biotic and abiotic stresses or constraints faced by farmers in their production systems. To illustrate the use of the technique, the yield gap method was applied to a group of farmers in order to identify their problems and rank the severity of each problem according to the magnitude of the yield loss associated to them.
Results of the study showed that the abiotic constraints were found to have greater effects on the rice production system in the study area. Among all the abiotic constraints, the agronomic and socio-economic factors were found to register the highest yield and production losses. On the other hand, constraint due to varietal degeneration proved to be the most important biotic problem. The ability to identify and rank the problems faced by the farmers in their farms allows will allow the extension agents of agricultural research institutions to suggest the appropriate measure/solutions and policy options towards increased productivity.
