Abstract

Two containerized heat pump dryers were pilot-tested in Cebu, Philippines to determine the technical and economic feasibility of applying the heat pump drying technology as an attractive alternative to existing drying systems of the local dried mango processors. Based on the analyses of data gathered from extensive drying performance tests, the 40-foot self-contained heat pump dryer powered by a Diesel-fed generator was able to attain up to 70 percent savings in energy costs compared with the existing LPG-fired dryers. Sensory evaluation of dried mango samples showed that the product met the quality specifications of the local processors based on the export quality requirements of their clients. Commercial application of this technology appears to be very promising.
