Abstract

The social research designs of reported studies on Community-Based Natural Resource Management (CBNRM) are critiqued using four research paradigms. Four interrelated components of research design are used, namely, research strategy, framework, sample, and tools and procedures for collecting and analyzing data. The four research paradigms that serve as framework for the critique are positivism/neo-positivism, interpretivism, critical theory, and participatory action research. The method used for the critique is meta-analysis of 74 study reports on CBNRM. From the research design of each reported study a best approximation is made to infer the paradigm that guided the research. The paper discusses the features of each paradigm as these are illustrated in the CBNRM studies. It concludes with the identification of the distinctive contribution of the studies within each paradigm and the complementation of all four paradigmatic genre in advancing the theory, research methods and practice of CBNRM.
