Abstract
Some of the works of Bencab, Imao, Luz and Malang, the four living Gawad CCP awardees in the visual arts, were studied primarily on the semiotic level. However, the descriptive and formalistic levels of discourse were also done to further deepen and enrich our understanding of some of the facets of Philippine cultural identity.
The works of the artists from the 1950s to the 90s were sourced from givens in the Philippine body politic. Bencab is political with incursions into social concerns. Imao is expectedly into showcasing Muslim culture, including some Muslim heroes. Luz is consistently technique-oriented, with occasional articulations on how the human mind operates in abstractions. Malang is into "safe" but timeless subjects. However, behind his seemingly commonplace subjects is a strong sense of humanity that binds Filipinos as a people.
