Abstract

Improper rice postharvest operations result to substantial grain losses at the farm level. About 10% to 30% of the grain harvested is lost due to inefficient processing. A survey of the Farm Level Grains Center (FLGC - II) instituted by the government in strategic places of the country to reduce grain losses and improve value adding activities by farmers revealed that mostly were not successful and sustainable as utilization rate was low and many were not profitable. Farmers participation was also limited constricting the volume of operation at the FLGC, The major problems experiences were lack of capital to purchase palay, absence of inventory control, and lack of management expertise to run the postharvest center.
