Abstract
The production of Landrace x Large White x Duroc x Pietrain crossbred market hogs has been a practice in the commercial piggeries in the Philippines. Presumably the performance of this four-breed crossed pigs has been at the level of satisfaction of the entrepreneurs otherwise they will not be popularly raised. It is clear, therefore, that what is only needed is the documentation of the performance of the said four-breed crossed pigs, hence this paper.
The performance of 266 pigs used in 5 studies conducted in one commercial piggery in Laguna. Philippines was used in this paper. The studies were conducted from 2000-2003. To evaluate the performance of the pigs the following variables were considered: initial weights, final weights, weight gain, feed consumption, average daily gain, and feed efficiency in each stage, namely; pre-starter, starter, grower and finisher.
The first study in 2000 revealed that pigs were weighing 23.811 kg, 43.633 kg and 56.860 kg at the start of starter, grower and finisher stages, respectively. In the same sequence, the final weights were 45.925 kg, 59.142 kg, and 78.125 kg, respectively. At the end of the 80 feeding days the average feed consumption of pigs was only 160.384 kg with feed efficiencies of 2.228, 2.873 and 3.227 for starter, grower and finisher, respectively.
The pigs in the second study had higher final weights than pigs in the first study for the three stages. The two group of pigs reached 86.7 kg and 86.225 kg at 150 days old. The average daily gains of pigs during the starter, grower and finisher stages were 0.896 kg, 0.876 kg and 0.623 kg, respectively. In the same sequence, the feed efficiencies were 1.702, 2.302 and 4.013 kg. The backfat thicknesses of all pigs averaged 15.166 mm.
In the 2001 study, the starter pigs had an initial weight of 24.50 kg but after 80 feeding days they reached an average 90.600 kg. The average daily gain of pigs were 0.785 kg, 0.855 kg, 0.874 kg for starter, grower and finisher stages, respectively while the feed efficiencies were 2.103, 2.585 and 3.128 for starter, grower and finisher, respectively.
