Abstract

This professional lecture broadly discussed the importance of producing sufficient amount of bioethanol to fulfill the requirements of the Biofuels Act of 2006. It was emphasized that the projected demand for bioethanol may be produced by using non-food feedstock like the lignocellulosic materials.

A survey of researchers on pretreatment and saccharification already conducted in other countries are presented in this paper. Furthermore, UPLB researches (with the author as co-worker) are included in the discussion. This brief presentations of data and results would enable the other interested researchers to identify research and development gaps, in order to help fast track the establishment of needed bioethanol plants, to produce bioethanol for blending in 2009 and 2011. Production of sufficient amount of bioethanol would help reduce importation not only of crude oil, but also of the bioethanol with come from Indonesia, Thailand and Brazil.
