Field response of corn to biofertilizers (VAMRI and BIOGREEN) in selected regions in the Philippines

Abstract

Field experiments were conducted to determine and demonstrate the effectiveness of two biofertilizers (VAMRI and BIOGREEN) for corn production in identified areas in Regions 2 (3 sites) and 4 (2 sites) in the Philippines. The experiments were laid out in RCBD with nine treatments and three replications for each treatments were as follows: T1- Uninoculated Control, T2- VAMRI (Vesicular Arbuscular Mycorrhiza), T3- BIOGREEN (Compost), T4- Recommended rate of chemical fertilizer (RRF), T5- VAMRI + RRF, T6- BIOGREEN + RRF, T8- 1/2 RRF +VAMRI, T9- 1/2 RRF + BIOGREEN. Generally, positive response of corn to VAMRI inoculation and BIOGREEN application was observed in two sites in Region 2. Yield of corn treated with these two biofertilizers was significantly higher compared to their untreated counterparts. Yield of corn inoculated with VAMRI + 1/2 RRF and BIOGREEN + 1/2 RRF was comparable with the yield obtained from plants applied with RRF but without any biofertilizer. Application of either VAMRI or BIOGREEN can reduce as much as 50 percent of chemical fertilizer. In the third site, a positive response of corn to BIOGREEN application was obtained. The effect of VAMRI was insignificant. In region 4 highest yield was obtained with those plants inoculated with VAMRI followed by those treated with BIOGREEN both with 1/2 RRF. Yield of plants with full RRF was comparable to those with plants treated with VAMRI and BIO-GREEN with RFF.
