Abstract
This study aimed to determine why public school teachers leave the Department of Education for a higher education institution. Investigate and understand the motives and causes influencing their decision to leave and their new path to higher education. In this study, the case study design, one of the qualitative research methods, was utilized to investigate the transition of public school teachers from Higher Education Institutions in depth. The criterion sampling method was chosen since the three working group members were picked from the recently hired university faculty. This paper concludes that most teachers are overworked and given additional extra workloads. Extra work assigned to public school teachers is a significant source of stress. Also, one of the main reasons teachers are stressed at work is unrelated tasks, such as area subject coordinator and other clerical work. Most teachers leave the Department of Education for greener pastures. Socioeconomic status is one of the most significant motivating factors for teachers to leave their careers. However, some teachers leave the profession for peace of mind and contentment. This paper also recommends better workloads and working environments for teachers both physically and mentally, better salary compensation, and a better management system for the public school under the Department of Education.
