Guest Editorial: Adaptive Engineering in Industry 5.0
On behalf of the organizing committee of iCEAT 2024 (3rd International Conference on Engineering and Agro-Industrial Technology), I have the pleasure to present this special issue of UP Los Baños Journal on Adaptive Engineering in Industry 5.0. The conference, which has a theme: “Adaptive Engineering in Industry 5.0: Bridging the gap between humans, artificial devices, and data to explore adaptive engineering solutions with lasting impact.” More importantly, the conference was part of the main events of University of the Philippines Los Baños CEAT’s (College of Engineering and Agro-Industrial Technology) 112th Founding Anniversary under the theme: “Championing Industry 5.0 through Adaptive Engineering”.
Industry 5.0, which is considered as the future of industrial transformation, specifically provides potential solutions to socio-economic and environmental issues that were inadequately addressed or aggravated by Industry 4.0. More particularly for Industry 5.0 is the involvement and integration of humans and machines in digital industrial transformation; the highlight of which is the focus on the role of humans in the advancement of technology. Because of this, the theme of the conference was timely in providing the latest research that bear significant contributions to knowledge regarding how engineering and agro-industrial technologies in the Philippines are made use to adapt to the need for involving humans when designing and developing innovative systems and for creating value and sustainability in the society, economy, and environment. A total of six select papers presented in the conference last 14-15 March 2024 are featured in this special issue that specifically addresses the overarching question of how engineering and technology are made to be adaptive for the effects brought to us by the Industry 5.0.
I would like to thank the editorial team at the UP Los Baños Journal, especially Dr. Nancy A. Tandang and Dr. Maria Dalisay G. Maligalig, for their support throughout this special issue process. I would like to appreciate the contribution of my associate editor Dr. Josefa Angelie D. Revilla, and to all the anonymous reviewers who generously participated in the blind review process. Thank you to all the authors who presented their works at the conference and further submitted their papers to this special issue. I believe with these six papers, this Special Issue has achieved its overarching aim, which is to shed light on how Industry 5.0 is taking shape and how engineering and technology is made for the adaptation of our operations, processes and management systems. I hope that the relevant points, particularly on the use of technology and innovative systems integrated with human interaction have been effectively communicated and will be used to further create effective and efficient organizational practice.
