Abstract

Young individuals who are first-time voters make up a large portion of our voting population. With the recent national elections that took place, it is important to look at what affected their voting preferences, especially those who voted for the first time. This study aims to evaluate the factors that affected voting preferences of first-time voters in the 2022 presidential elections together with how different sources of information influenced first-time voters’ voting decisions. Using an online survey, preliminary data were gathered along with possible participants for the interview. The online survey showed that most of the first-time voters who responded voted for the top 2 presidential candidates, Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and Leni Robredo, hence the participants for the interview were voters of the top 2 candidates only. There were a total of 6 interviews conducted for this research, and with the data gathered from these interviews common themes were identified through thematic analysis in relation to the voters’ voting preferences, environmental influences, and political participation. The study found that some of the qualities of a candidate that first-time voters looked into were their educational background, experience in government service, and cultural background as these can all be attributed to competency and ability to lead the country. Social media also played a huge part for first-time voters for information and as a platform for online political participation which contributed to their political knowledge and decision making. Lastly, the study also found their voting decisions are influenced by their families and friends as they engage in political discourse with them. Ultimately, these results contribute to political awareness of young individuals by putting importance on the reasons behind a vote, but could also be used as a springboard for further studies on voter’s education to create more critical voters in our country.
