Abstract
Solar energy is a renewable source of energy that can be harnessed to generate electricity. This study aims to explore alternative sources of energy due to high demand of fossil fuels and ongoing energy crisis worldwide, leading to increased electricity costs and global fuel prices. The adoption of solar energy systems in academic institutions remains limited despite the availability of abundant sunlight in the Philippines. This study aims to assess the techno-economic feasibility of adopting solar energy systems as the alternative energy source for the University of the Philippines Rural High School. It focuses on analyzing the current energy consumption patterns and costs of the school to estimate the total investment cost and analyze the financial viability of the potential implementation of solar energy systems. Through a needs assessment survey, the awareness of students was documented to determine their knowledge, perception, and acceptance of solar energy systems. Key informant interviews were conducted to gain insights from selected participants who have relevant knowledge and experience. A techno-economic analysis was utilized to evaluate the benefit-cost ratio (BCR), simple payback period (SPL), return on investment (ROI), and internal rate of return (IRR) of the three chosen solar panel suppliers, namely SolarBay, Z-Squared, and Vimara. A SWOT analysis was used to assess its strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats to identify potential benefits and challenges of the project. The results showed that Z-Squared has a BCR of 4.20, an SPL of 2.56 years, an ROI of 557.18% over 25 years, and an IRR of 32%. Meanwhile, Vimara has a BCR of 2.94, an SPL of 3.17 years or approximately 38 months, an ROI of 593.77%, and an IRR of 30%. Lastly, SolarBay has the highest BCR of 4.89, making it the optimal investment despite having an SPL of 3.28 years, ROI of 581.16%, and IRR of 29%.
