3D Modeling of Selected Senior High School Classrooms at University of the Philippines Rural High School based on Physical Assessment and Student Perception in Accordance with National Building Standards

Abstract

Quality education mainly relies on the safe and inclusive physical environment that should ensure a student’s well-being. This study aims to assess the newly constructed Senior High School (SHS) building at University of the Philippines Rural High School (UPRHS), focusing on the physical learning environment and how its design aligns with ergonomic principles and student perception. This research aims to assess the perceptions of SHS students from Classes 2026 and 2027 on their physical learning environment, compare selected UPRHS SHS classrooms to the national building measurements, and design two digital SHS classroom models based on received data. Data were gathered from 108 students through an online Google Form survey with likert-scale questions, interpreted using frequency and percentage analysis which is then backed up with comments from the open-ended questions. Classroom and equipment dimensions were taken using a tape measure, while temperature, relative humidity and luminosity were recorded with a thermo-hygrometer and a light meter, respectively. Accordingly, digital classroom models were then created using the Tinkercad software in line with the obtained results and national building standards. Results revealed that while SHS classrooms generally met the national building standards, from classroom size, flooring, to illumination, they failed to meet some requirements. From the data, comments were obtained, such as the experienced discomfort with the air circulation and body pain from the provided school chairs and desks. In response, the generated 3D model proposes adjustable furniture, modified placement of equipment, and recommended materials for enhanced comfort. The feedback from the presented 3D model received a 85.33% high satisfactory rating from the students. The study concludes that addressing these specific ergonomic gaps can significantly improve the quality of the learning environment and promote a safe, conducive space.
