Abstract
This study aims to determine the relevance of vertical gardening in the Gulayan sa Paaralan Program by evaluating its implementation in two schools. The study used the SAF Analysis which is composed of three criteria namely Suitability, Acceptability, and Feasibility. With suitability of the method as a good addition to propagate crops to help implement the GPP in each specific school, acceptability of the method by the students and other gardening staff, and the feasibility or practicality of setting the gardens up instead of more traditional farming methods. An internship was conducted at the Ornamental Crops Nursery (OCN), Institute of Crop Science (ICropS), where the basics of plant production and vertical gardening were taught. Technical bases of the evaluation of each school’s implementation of the GPP were also based on learnings during this program. One teacher and 13-15 students participated in the key informant interviews (KII) and focused group discussions (FGD) in each school. Responses from the KIIs, FGDs and actual field observations showed that vertical gardening was used under limited space and as an effective way to adapt to weather conditions. Vertical gardening proved to be suitable, acceptable and feasible despite the varying conditions of each school. Integration of animals, fish production and other organic agriculture technologies were also observed in one or both schools. On the side note, the issue of the declining interest of students in agriculture was also mentioned. Recommendations to further improve the implementation of vertical gardening and make it more widely used in each school were given not only to improve harvests in the GPP but also to enhance students’ appreciation of agriculture.
