Abstract
This study was conducted as a part of a capstone internship at the University of the Philippines Los Banos under the Institute of Crop Science, focusing on implementing the use of fermented calcium phosphate (Calphos) to increase the yield and quality of mungbean (Vigna radiata L.) microgreens. Through activities at the Seed Technology Laboratory and the Postharvest Horticulture Training and Research Center (PHTRC), the internship offered both theoretical and practical instruction in seed technology, postharvest horticulture, and microgreens production. Insights and practical operations such as seed quality evaluation, postharvest processes, as well as, seed testing and packaging, along with total phenolic content (TPC) analysis, informed the selection of pertinent their significance in preserving the freshness and minimizing weight loss. The study evaluated the effectiveness of fermented calcium phosphate (Calphos) in improving the yield, quality, and shelf life of mungbean (Vigna radiata) microgreens. The calphos used in this study were applied at different concentrations using two methods: soil drenching and foliar spraying. Different parameters, including germination performance, biomass, and plant height, were measured to analyze quality of yield. The experiment utilized Factorial in Randomized Complete Block Design. Temperature remained stable (p = 0.182, 0.893), while relative humidity showed a significant interaction (p = 0.005). Germination rate index differed significantly between trials (p = 0.012). Calphos significantly affected yield, fresh
weight, and shoot length (p < 0.05), with 2 tbsp/L identified as the preferred treatment along with soil drenching for optimal microgreen growth and productivity. Overall, the findings of the study suggest that the productivity and postharvest quality of mungbean microgreens can be enhanced and maximized by the use of fermented calcium phosphate. The study emphasized the importance of optimizing the concentration and mode of application to maximize the benefits of Calphos in microgreen production.
