Abstract
The increasing demand of cellular data is becoming a necessity in modern society to a point where without access to the Internet, certain aspects of people’s daily lives will be significantly affected such as entertainment, academic, and communication needs. This study focused on creating a program to optimize the placement of cell signal towers to address the issue of suboptimal placement of cell signal towers which leads to poor coverage across populated areas. Specifically, the study developed a model that uses the genetic algorithm to optimize cell signal tower placement in Calauan, Laguna, accounting for signal strength, elevation, and signal range. The algorithm used the Digital Elevation Model (DEM) and Google Earth data of Calauan, Laguna and created a population to iteratively evaluate the fitness per generation. The model determined the best location of the cell signal tower and output the coordinates of that location. Results showed that the model outputted more accurate and consistent results with a smaller mutation step size of 0.005° and that increasing the number of towers from 3 to 4 significantly improves regional coverage. Future work may consider performing more test runs for each group, testing at different areas, and including more parameters such as the presence of infrastructures like buildings and existing cell signal towers to better improve the model.
