Abstract
The determination of water quality depends on physico-chemical factors. These factors directly affect the metabolic processes, nutrient availability, and environmental conditions that can either promote or inhibit oyster growth. This paper is an environmental assessment of the Bambang River, San Juan, Batangas. The research was conducted during an internship at the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) Regional Fisheries Laboratory (IV-A). The study was conducted to evaluate the water quality of above mentioned site of oyster cultivation. Two sampling sites were selected for the study and five important parameters (temperature, salinity, pH, dissolved oxygen (DO) and turbidity) were studied using standard field and laboratory methods. Preliminary results indicated that there were significant differences in water chemistry between the two sample locations, with Sample Site #1 being a high energy lotic habitat and Sample Site #2 being a low energy, lentic-like environment. Peer reviewed growth models confirm that the higher thermal profile of Site #1 is highly correlated with slower oyster development, and that the neutral pH and higher mineral content of Site #2 are conducive for efficient oyster filtration. This study aims to add to the knowledge base on potential impacts of regional differences on water conditions and impacts of water conditions on oyster farming. This highlights the importance of combining in situ sampling with environmental factors specific to a site to understand the appropriateness of a region for oyster growth.
