Abstract

Having a chronic disease requires ongoing care and practical strategies for managing daily activities while maintaining comfort and quality of life. Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) and spirituality are frequently utilized by patients, besides other modalities, when dealing with chronic pain. Several existing studies tackle the use of CAM and spirituality separately in terms of illness management. This paper aimed to demonstrate the intersectionality of CAM and spirituality and how they overlap in ways that benefit patients with chronic illnesses. The study aims to understand the use of CAM and spirituality by people with chronic illnesses, the reasons for their use, the consequent repercussions, and how the two are coupled with conventional treatments. This qualitative descriptive investigation included Key Informant Interviews. The results indicated that participants perceived CAM as an additional treatment option. CAM comes in many forms and is used by patients for varying lengths of time. Benefits included advances in mobility, less discomfort, enhanced emotional control and increased resilience. Also, spiritual practices like breathwork, visualization and prayer are important in handling stress and anxiety. Some individuals faced difficulties in using these techniques due to finances, accessibility issues, and inadequate institutional support. Nonetheless, it was highlighted that these techniques should be used harmoniously alongside medical treatments. CAM and spiritual techniques are beneficial for chronic illness management since they promote physical, mental, and emotional well-being. It is strongly recommended that a more widespread information dissemination about CAM and spirituality be done for the general public. There is a tremendous need for differentiating between spirituality and religion. Moreover, universities offering Medical and Allied Health degrees should incorporate these into their curricula so that future practitioners will be more knowledgeable and embracing of CAM and spirituality.
