Abstract
Parenting is the process of raising children and providing them care and security to ensure their well-being until adulthood (Chan, 2004). Parenting styles have been one of the widely researched topics, but most researches did not use qualitative research designs and did not focus on children's perspective. This study aimed to provide a deeper understanding on the effects of parenting styles on senior high school students' academic performance and social behavior. Also, this study aimed to identify and assess the parenting styles, along with its corresponding effects, experienced by students. Furthermore, it focused on the students' perception of the effects of the parenting styles that they experience. This study used both quantitative (correlational analysis) and qualitative (case study) research designs. A survey and an in-depth interview were conducted to assess the effects of parenting styles experienced by the students. 125 senior high school students were surveyed at the first part of data gathering then ten students were selected to be the participants for the interview. It was found out in the correlational analysis that there was no significant correlation between the parenting styles and General Weighted Average (GWA) of the students. However, the interview participants said that the parenting styles they experience have a significant effect on their academic performance. They also said that their parents are their motivation to study, coming from either the support or the pressure from their parents. Furthermore, having a rewards and punishment system also contributed to their motivation to study well. Due to the time constraint, this study was not able to further assess the other aspects affected by the parenting styles. Moreover, both the parents and their children are needed to be interviewed in order to further analyze the effects of parenting style.
