Date

Abstract

The Cooperative Development Authority Region V reported that 11 out of 51 registered cooperatives in the province of Albay are active. Along this context, this study was conducted to determine the sustainability of agricultural cooperatives in the Third District of Albay. An intensive analysis of two agricultural cooperatives through key informant interviews and focus group discussions was employed to gather first-hand narratives from participants. Both cooperatives under study were established to provide significant improvement in the quality of life of the members, Majority of members are male and aging. One cooperative has an active status while the other one has an inactive membership with the CDA. The Quipia Agrarian Reform Beneficiaries Cooperative QARBC) offered a diverse portfolio of products and services to their members while the Albay Dairy Farm Cooperative (ADFC) relied on a single product offering. Both cooperatives integrate community development approaches and methods into their operations. Using 10 sets of sustainable criteria, the study shows that both cooperatives have moderate sustainability level which denotes the adaption and integration of sustainable practices in their cooperatives. Both cooperatives encountered common challenges but differed in terms of severity. Insights of this study can directly contribute to various Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) related to poverty alleviation (SDG1) and food security (SDG2). Similarly, this study can contribute to a more sustainable and equitable future for Filipino agriculture by examining the potential of agricultural cooperatives. Finally, the study contributes to the development of a holistic framework to enhance the sustainability of agricultural cooperatives in the province of Albay and in the Philippines.
