Abstract

The spelling net of a phrase or sentence is a graph whose vertices represent characters and whose edges represent character adjacencies. The spelling nets of each of the sentences in the instruction of the game Master Mind were constructed, where in the distinct letters in each of the sentences was considered as characters or vertices of the graph. The gale Master Mind has different language translations like Danish, English, French, Italian, korean, Malay, Mandarin, Nederlands and Nippongo. Different spelling nets were developed for each of these languages. The different languages ware grouped according to the four graphical measures of the spelling nets such as genus, connectivity, crossing !wilier and lean crossing limber. With such groupings, crossing number yielded a grouping of these different languages which coinside with the grouping of the comparative method developed by linguists. Crossing number can now be considered as the best quantified measure of spelling nets. Therefore, investigating the orthographic structures and the appropriate group of other languages not included in this study requires the translation of the instruction in the gale Master Mind of these languages.
