Abstract

Estimates of derivative were used to approximate force of mortality of the 1958 CSO Mortality Table. Newton forward, Gauss forward and least-squares formulas were applied to the problems. A computer program was constructed to solve the problem. Ages 1 to 58 were considered in the approximation. Newton forward formula was found to produce the closest approximation to and was concluded as the best estimator of D among the three.
