Abstract

A major practice in plantation crops production and management consisting of on-campus and off-campus activities was undertaken by the student from December 1979 to March 1980. It was aimed to sharpen the decision making faculty of the student, identify and analyze problems in the farm and give alternative solutions, offer feasible recommendations for the resolution of production problems, and enable the student to acquire practical farming skills and techniques through exposure to actual farm operations.

In the on-campus farming activities in the UPLB-MNR Agroforest Nursery, Coconut Intercropping Project in UPLB and at Paiisa, Tiaong, Quezon the student was exposed to farm activities that prepared him for off-campus activities.

In the off-campus activities in small farms in Barrio Mamala, Sariaya, Quezon, in Barrio Niing, San Antonio, Quezon, and in Barrio Barandal, San Francisco, Lipa City, the student lived in the farm for three months and performed all management practices in the said farms.

It was observed that farmers particularly in Bo. Mamala are receptive to new technology and innovations. Some problems however, which hampers development include lack of unity among farmers, poor transportation system, lack of electric power and slow rate of information dessimination. Among the recommendations to remedy these problems are leadership support on farmers' association from concerned government agencies and road improvement.
