Abstract

The study evaluates the content of Math (Algebra), a self-teaching module of the Diploma in Science Teaching in terms of readability, reader appeal, student involvement and fitness of the material to its target users. Results were numerically verified via the indices and formulae of Romey, Flesch and Talisayon. A new method was devised. This evaluates the words in terms of simplicity. The words were described as simple with the aid of the new method. The readability level of the manual was found to be difficult; its reader appeal dull. The indices obtained revealed that the text is non-investigative. The figures, diagrams and tables are for illustrative purposes only. The self-assessment questions are primarily authoritarian. A concept map was also designed to verify proper sequencing of topics in the manual.
