Abstract

This study was conducted at the Department of Horticulture, College of Agriculture, UP at Los Banos from September, 1978 to May, 1979 to evaluate the nursery performances of some coconut hybrids together with the 'Laguna' cultivar. The hybrid nuts were allowed to germinate and placed either in polybags or seedbeds for months.

No significant differences in germination rate and the time to germination were observed among the materials tested. Polybagged seedlings were significantly taller than those in the seedbeds. Seedling vigor of hybrids differed from one another but all of them had greater height increment than the 'Laguna'. Shoot color varied ,among the five hybrids, depending on the parent palms. Dominance of purple pigments over yellow and/ or green tree noted. However, a cross between orange or purple resulted into dark purple seedlings.
