Abstract

Significant learnings and experiences were acquired during the major practice in Ayala Westgrove Heights subdivision, that was done every Saturday from January to September 2006 and everyday from April to May 2006. With actual involvement in much of the pruning works, she was able to know which guying materials are best for a particular plant. In this case, GI wires were used for the more expensive Date palm (Phoenix dactylifera) while wooden poles were used for the less expensive White Kalachuchi (Plumeria obtusa). Too dense planting of shrubs done at the Westgrove will later on lead to a condition that favors aphid infestation and the development of sooty mold.

The chance given her to design and be involved in the implementation of a cul-de-sac or rotunda and the surroundings of the retail center and in caring for the plants in other areas like at the Water Works (Booster) was an opportunity to see the impact of insufficient or sufficient budget to a project. Normally. with sufficient logistics, the designer is given more space in conceptualizing a good design. The opportunity to make the design for the cul-de-sac also provided her to test her planning and drawing skills.

She was involved in the bidding process to determine which landscape contractor the project will be awarded. This process is important to make sure that the plan will be implemented properly within the agreed cost. A simple cost analysis of the landscaping of the Sports Center was made to show the estimated cost of the landscape project. It showed that labor cost could reach 30% while a contractor could earn 20% of the total cost, respectively. In this project, approximately 39% of the total cost was allotted to plants.
