Abstract

A parametric study was performed to determine the effects of filter cake loading (0, 10, 20, 30 g/L medium) and initial pH (5.5, 6.5, 7.5) on the microbial hydrogen production by Enterobacter aerogenes 1764. Eight experimental runs of different combinations of the factors were carried out and data on hydrogen evolution (mL/L medium) and final pH were obtained every how for six hours. Using Repeated Measures Analysis of variance across time for a single factorial experimental design by mixed models analysis, regression models for the two responses were obtained. Linear models were chosen in order to predict the individual effects of the two parameters on the responses. The highest volume of hydrogen produced was at 20 g/L, followed by 30 g/L,10 g/L and then 0 g/L. Hydrogen evolution is also highest at pH 6.5, followed by 7.5 and then 5.5. At 20g/L and pH 6.5, 5.69mL of Hydrogen evolved with an efficiency of 76.29%.
