Abstract

The major practice was conducted in Camp John Hay, Baguio City, a former U.S. Air Force recreational facility and now one of the major tourist destinations in the city. from the 27th day of April to 27°' day of May. 2007. The student satisfied the major objective of the study as he focused on the evaluation and maintenance of the existing softscapes in areas like golf course, Club House. Manor Hotel. Country and Forest Estate. He also participated in some of the maintenance operations being done in the site.

Through direct observation, participation and interviews, the student was able to develop four (4) criteria that were used for the evaluation of the plants. These are function, requirement, site adaptability and maintenance management of the plants.

Functions of the plants were further classified according to their aesthetics and architectural character. Aesthetic functions of the plants refer to the observed basic elements of the design like color, texture, form and size. While architectural character of the plants refers to the classification according to landscape function such as screen, hedge, barrier, groundcover, undercover and accent. In addition, the requirements of plants were related to its adaptability on the site. The various environmental conditions such as temperature, water, light, as well as the physical and climatological factors of the site were used as criteria for plant adaptability.

Lastly, the student evaluated the plants in terms of their maintenance management. It summed up the over all performance of the plants as maintenance management is predetermined and affected by the suitability of the plants in the site. It also affects the function of the plants as well.

Results from the evaluation using the criteria showed that some plants do not function well on the site. They are affected by their suitability and the maintenance practice employed on them. It is important to keep in mind that proper selection of plants also entails critical analysis of the landscape site. In addition, most of the plants in the landscape are annual plants which are costly and lasts for some few months, thus it is recommended that colorful perennial plants substitute some of the annual plants in the landscape. After the major practice, the student was able to accomplish the expected outputs of the study. Recommendations were given to minimize or totally eliminate the problems that were encountered during the conduct of the major practice.
