Abstract

The major practice was conducted at Greenbelt Townhomes (under the zone of Greenbelt 2 Mall), an exclusive townhouse community located at the upscale area of lisperanza Drive. Makati City. The major practice was conducted from May 21, 2009 to October 26, 2009. The site exudes utmost exclusivity since this low-density townhouse community is nestled atop of Greenbelt 2 Mall's carpark building.

The major practice concentrated on the whole area of Greenbelt Townhomes which includes the front lobby pocket garden, the front pocket gardens of each of the 28 existing townhouse units (since back pocket gardens can only be accessed if there are requests of maintenance from the residents); and with a special focus on the Courtyard. This area, which Greenbelt Townhomes is proud of, is a 600 sq.m. garden oasis which conveys a Zen theme that is situated at the very heart of the community. The student was tasked to document all of the existing plants and trees of Townhomes, do daily rounds to inspect each area, verify the checklist of the gardener's daily tasks, and even grant special requests of pocket garden modifications for residents; all while being supervised by security personnel as a standard safety protocol for Greenbelt Townhomes. When practicum-related tasks were done earlier than of the given time period, the student also assists in Greenbelt Townhomes office paperwork.

During the duration of the major practice, the problems that were encountered are: lack of space provided for a plant nursery, lack of available landscape maintenance equipment. absence of a plant catalogue of existing plants in the site, lack of irrigation sources, lack of in-house horticulturist and landscape maintenance personnel, lack of training of personnel in terms of landscape maintenance operations, among others. Recommendations to address these problems were presented.
