Abstract

Cultural practices in the production and management of coffee in Indang, Cavite and Ibaan, Batangas were assessed to give a comparative evaluation.

The study was conducted in two coffee farms, one in Indang, Cavite and one in Ibaan. Batangas owned and managed by Mr. Nestor de as alas Costa and Mr. Eliseo Vergara, respectively. Randomly selected coffee farmers from both areas were also interviewed regarding the cultural practices for coffee employed in their farm.

Pruning, previously cited to be the basic difference in the production and management of coffee between Cavite and Batangas, has been adopted by Mr. Vergara (Ibaan) and majority of the coffee farmers in Ibaan, Batangas for the last two to three years. Fertilization, weeding, cultivation, harvesting, pest/disease control, and irrigation are similar in both sites.

Recommendations were presented to improve the cultural practices in the production and management of coffee employed by Mr. Costa and Mr. Vergara and the other coffee farmers in Indang, Cavite and Ibaan, Batangas, particularly irrigation, fertilizer application, and pest management.
