Abstract

This paper dealt with the problem of gender inequality. Women are being treated and judged according to their gender and not according to what they can do. Society is dictating them on what they should be doing and how they should act — simply put, women are oppressed.

Feminists recognize the fact that women are oppressed and they are doing something about it. Two of the several kinds of feminism are liberal and radical feminism. Between these two theories, the problem is about which side has the better concept of equality. Is it the first one (liberal feminism) that proposes equality of opportunity for both sexes or is it the other (radical feminism) that seeks equality in every possible way?

This study affirmed the liberal feminists' concept of equality — that equality of opportunity is the best way to liberate women. Women like men are also human beings who possess rationality and autonomy. They are also members of the society so they should be treated as citizens with rights and privileges and should not be oppressed because of their gender. Women should also be accepted for who they are and what they can do. Men and women are different but it doesn't mean that their values as persons are also different.
