Abstract
A microcontroller-based smart card operated vending system was designed and implemented. A vending machine was constructed for the implementation of the vending system. A reader/writer circuit was developed to communicate with the GSM SIM card. The device used the USART of the microcontroller to transmit and receive data from the GSM SIM card. The ATMEGAI6L microcontroller was programmed with the code for the vending system. Two motors were used in the design of the vending machine controlling the products placed inside. The constructed vending machine was used to simulate the functions of a vending system using GSM SIM card. Different GSM SIM cards from local network companies were tested for its compatibility with the device. Based from the tests done with the vending system it is therefore concluded that a GSM SIM card can be used as an electronic purse.
