Abstract

A portable instrument for peal-time monitoring of volatile organic and compounds (VOC's) in air was designed and fabricated using RIS2620 VOC gas sensor and Z8F6401 microcontroller unit (MCW. The user options \\ere viewed through the 20x4 liquid crystal display (LCD) and executed by means of the generic 4x3 numeric keypad. A digital temperature sensor was also incorporated in the instrument. The time interval for the data logging is user-defined. The instrument is may be interfaced to a personal computer through the UART console. A Visual Basic program was developed for data reading. The instrument was calibrated by volatilizing different concentrations of ethanol solution, from 0ppm to 5000ppm. The sensor voltage output range is from 1.110V to 4.345V. Initial data gathering was made inside the Preparatory Room. Computer Hardware and Instrumentation Physics Room no.2. and Materials Physics Laboratory Room. The VOC concentrations recorded from these rooms were below the maximum allowable VOC concentration. Field-testing was made inside two photocopying centers with different type of photocopying machines. Paponei's Copy Center, which uses liquid-based photocopying machines, possess higher VOC concentrations, compared to KW & E Copy Center, which uses powder-based photocopying machines.
