Abstract
A transmittance-absorbance spectroscopy was conducted on the leaves of twenty . different rice varieties in the vegetative stage and to eight varieties in the reproductive stage. The leaves were acquired from the Plant Breeding, Genetics and Biochemistry Division. International Rice Research Institute. The spectra were measured from 400mm to 1400 using the spectroscopy set-tip at the Material Physics Laboratory, Institute of Mathematical Science and Physics, College of Arts and Sciences, UPLB. The acquired spectra were correlated to the morpho-agronomic description of the rice varieties. The result showed that spectral characteristic measured from the samples show no relation to any other morpho-agronomic descriptor used by IRRI. Spectral characteristic is unique in its nature and can he used as another descriptor for rice varieties.
