Abstract
A PC-based moisture meter was developed to measure moisture content of wood. The instrument was calibrated using Yemane (Gmelina arborea Roxb.). The instrument is a resistance type moisture meter. A constant voltage is fed to an amplifier and the gain of which depends on the resistance of the wood being tested. A total of 104 wood samples were tested. Fifteen samples were used to calibrate the instrument while the remaining samples were used to test the accuracy of the device. The calibration yielded a positive linear correlation with the results using gravimetric method. The results were compared to the moisture meter of FPRDI*. The device was able to measure wood moisture content at 83.7% accuracy compared to 82.6% accuracy of the analog moisture meter of the FPRDI. Thus it could be used as an alternative moisture meter for wood.
