Abstract
The effect of number of layers on the film morphology and optical transmittance of poly(sodium 4-styrene sulfonate) (PSS), poly(di-methyl di-allylammonium chloride) (PDDA), and anatasetitanium dioxide (Ti02) composite films was investigated. Bilayers of polyelectrolyte film from 1 M PSS (pH 6.48) and I M PDDA (pH 6.44) were deposited on a glass substrate. Both solutions were dissolved in water with 1 M NaCI. Different bilayers of polyelectrolytes, denoted as (PSS/PDDA),,, where n= 3, 7, and 20,were fabricated following layer-by-layer deposition. The initial and terminal polyelectrolytes for all composite films were PSS and PDDA, respectively. Electron micrographs revealed that film thickness increased with the number of bilayers. Deposition of TiO2on the bilayers formed the composite (PSS/PDDA)„/Ti02. It was observed that intercalated Na+ and Cl" counter-ions crystallized upon addition of a TiO2 layer. Crystalline formation was pronounced and pattern was more discernible in n = 20 compared to thinner films with less number of layers. UV-Vis spectroscopy of (PSS/PDDA)„/TiO2 showed a significant decrease of %transmittance in thicker films. The result from this study could provide information on the possible control and manipulation of polyelectrolyte film thickness infiltering and lensing applications.
