Abstract

A PC-based counter and controller using an inductive proximity sensor was designed and tested. The design included an on/off circuit that employed a Single Pole Double Throw (SPDT) relay for the motor, a direction control circuit that employed a Double Pole Double Throw (DPDT) relay, also for the motor, a input/output card that was connected to the PC, and a program for the counter and controller of the system. The program featured that the user can input any desired number for the limit of the count and was automatically reset after the limit was reached. Also featured in the program was the choice of the direction of the motor, whether clockwise or counterclockwise or even both, depending on the requirement of the machine to be applied. Furthermore a timer was also placed and it can be varied depending on the time to be inputted by the user based on the machine or conveyor requirement. The test was done by passing metal objects by the sensor. The sensor was supplied an amount voltage of 5 volts. As the metal objects were passed by the sensor, the counter was displayed at the monitor, which incremented with the metal objects passed. When no metal was detected, the counter did not increment. After the inputted number to be counted was reached, the counter automatically returned to zero. Sample readings of the output voltage for certain numbers or amounts to be counted were noted. The design that was made and tested proved to be a simple yet useful PC-based counter controller using an inductive proximity sensor that is applicable for the development of the sensoric technology that will in turn help in the development of the industrial automation.
