Abstract

Sodium dodecyl-sulfate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis was performed on the endosperm proteins of the three coconut varieties: Catigan (CAT). Laguna (LAG) and the CATxLAG hybrid. A total of seven bands were observed. Band nos. 1, 2, 3, 5, 6 and 7 were found in all three varieties. Band no. 4 is absent in all accessions of CAT. The high similarity index between LAG and CATxLAG (100.0%) compared to the similarity index between CAT and CATxLAG (71.4%-85.7%) suggests that the former is more genotypically similar than the latter. The index of similarity within varieties also suggest that CAT (83.3%-100.0%) has differences in protein band pattern while CATxLAG and LAG (100.0%) do not. The results in this study suggests that the theory that the dwarf and tall coconuts come from one ancestor (Menon and Pandali, 1958; Harries, 1982; Persely, 1992) might be correct. It also suggests hybridization is a source of variation in coconut. Introduction of more variation into the germplasm could still prove to be beneficial to the widening of the coconut's genetic base and the improvement of its quality.
