Abstract

A PC-based image acquisition system and storage capable of capturing images from a video source as a digital graphic image and storing it in a GIF file was designed and implemented in the study. The main components of the system are the PCVISIONplus Frame Grabber. CCD camera. IBM PC AT compatible computer. and the primitive routine library and GIF storage software. The principle of image acquisition and storage were studied. The primitive routines for the hardware and the GIF storage utility were developed using Turbo C version 2.0. The storage utility was a modification of the GIF library written by Gershon Elber. It was designed for the specific use on the PCVISIONplus single-scan mode. The hardware was assembled. The software was tested on the system for errors and flaws. Sample images were acquired and stored to disk in GIF file as 640 x 480 images in 256 shades of gray. The files were loaded on GIF compatible software to test its compatibility with standards. The images were viewed on a GIF file viewer to verify the quality of the image stored. The image viewed occupied about 80 percent of the 640 x 480 screen. Trash data occupied the remaining 20 percent on the right edge of the image. This was approximated to have and area of 128 x 480 pixels. However, there was no image loss observed. This was attributed to the characteristic of the frame grabber of not fully ac^Xxmodating the 640 x 480 image captured during image acquisition. The amount of storage required to store the GIF file was half of that required to store a raw (bit-mapped) file. The small file size, integrity, quality and acceptability of the output GIF file showed that the GIF is a very good graphics file format. The effective documentation of the software allow it to serve an instructional purpose.
