Abstract
The hemocytes of the legs of newly-emerged adult of diamondback moth, Eiutella xylostella L. of France; Cabuyao, Laguna; and Sta. Catalina, Vigan strains were studied using squash technique with Wright's stain. The differential and total hemocyte counts were determined for each strain. Observable characteristics like sizes, shapes and frequencies of the various hemocyte types were also noted. Gupta's identification key (1979) was used in the nomenclature of the different hemocyte types found in each strain. The France strain which was used as susceptible check for insecticide tolerance contained only prohemocytes while Cabuyao had both prohemocytes and spherulocytes and Ste. Catalina with prohemocytes and granulocytes. There was significant difference in total hemocyte counts between Sta. Catalina and France strains while Cabuyao also differed significantly from France strain. This was reflected in previous toxicology studies which established France strain as the most susceptible to different insecticides, Cabuyao as moderately susceptible and Sta. Catalina as the most resistant of the three. Granulocytes were found to exhibit phagocytic action while spherulocytes, though linked to membrane formation, were very degenerative in nature. Prohemocytes function in reproduction but not in immunity.
