Abstract

College students' ability to transcribe mathematical phrases to symbols was presented. A test on mathematical phrases was constructed and administered to five sections of Math 11. All papers with incorrect answers were used to identify the students' ability and the error patterns --the erroneous procedure committed by ten or more students- in transcribing phrases. The study undertaken showed that the students did not have a clear understanding of the mathematical phrases used and as a consequence, they lack the ability to transcribe these phrases. Possible causes of errors based on the identified error patterns were determined. These were used to arrive at a recommended remediation to lessen the probability of the occurance of the same problems in the future.
