Abstract

Acetocarmine squash technique was used to determine the karyotype and mitotic stages of H. coronarium. Somatic cells of the plant were found to have chromosome numbers ranging from 2n= 18 to 32. The modal chromosome number was 2n= 24 having a frequency of 38.46 %. Centromeric position was not determined owing to the smallness and maximal contraction of chromosomes. Among the chromosomes measured, the longest chromosomes has an average relative length of 0.0592 while the smallest chromosomes showed an average relative length of 0.0289. Mitosis was normal in all cells observed. Mitotic index of the cell was 17.58 t
