Abstract
Root tip cells were studied to described the chromosome number and chromosome morphology of Aloe barbadensis. Photomicrographs of cells prepared using the squash technique were used to construct karyograms. Eight long and six short chromosomes were observed which comprised a somatic chromosome number of 2n=14 . Using the nomenclature of levan et al. (1964) the chromosomes were classified into four groups: Group I with subterminal centromere, Group II with submedian centromere, Group III with median centromere, and Group IV with terminal centromere. Mitotic index was found to be 12.76%.
