Abstract

Rice is one of the major crops in the Philippines. It is 20% of the gross value added (GVA) of the country’s agriculture. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), 2.5 million households in the country are dependent on rice as their source of income. The rice industry is considered to be one of the top priorities of agricultural policies in the country. With the constant rise of the population of the country, there is also an increasing demand for rice.

Sto. Niño Multi-Purpose Cooperative (SNMPC) is a cooperative operating in Agusan Del Norte. It is registered as an agricultural, multi-purpose cooperative which has engaged in rice production and processing since 1991. There were already existing problems such as the increase in competition and low bargaining power in terms of price. In 2019, the cooperative had a net loss of Php 2,6 million.

The main objective of this study was to assess the business performance of Sto.Nino Multi-Purpose Cooperative (SNMPC). This study also aimed to 1) describe the external environment of the rice industry in the Philippines; 2) present the internal environment of Sto. nono Multi-Purpose cooperative; 3)evaluate the current business performance of the cooperative based on the functional areas; 4) identify the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats of the cooperative; 5) recommend strategies to improve the cooperative business performance.

The primary data for this study were gathered from Sto. Nino Multi-Purpose Cooperative through phone and physical interviews with Marilyn Aranas, chairman of the cooperative. Other key personnel of the cooperatives were also interviewed for validation and have a balanced and holistic analysis. The data gathered, which include the internal and external environment of the cooperative, were used in assessing the current state of the cooperative. Financial statements of the cooperative were also analyzed to have a better understanding of the status and competitiveness of the cooperative.

After discussing and analyzing the different factors affecting the cooperative, it was identified that the main problem of the cooperative is its limited share. This is a result of their lack of outlets, low promotional activities, and their inability to offer rice in smaller amounts. To address the problem, the researcher recommends that the cooperative focus on marketing penetration. This involves targeting a specific market for specialty rice products. The cooperative can focus on food establishments in Butuan City that provide healthy options in their menu. Focusing on a specific market for specialty rice will help the cooperative have less competition. This may also help in building stronger relationships for the cooperative since they would target a smaller market. This strategy will help improve the cooperative’s performance and profitability in the long run.
