A critical discourse of the Nationalistic, Scientific, and Mass-Oriented (NSM) education in the protest speeches of the University of the Philippines-Los Baños student activists

Abstract

This study delves on how the University of the Philippines - Los Baños student activists construct a nationalistic, scientific, and mass-oriented (NSM) education in their protest speeches, which were recorded during the UPLB’s 2nd semester of Academic Year 2018-2019. This incorporates as frameworks Norman Fairclough’s Critical Discourse Analysis and Raymie McKerrow’s Critical Rhetoric. This looked into the mass-orientedness of education, the ideology of a nationalistic education, and the concept of a scientific education and delved on the structural patterns (grammatical mood, cohesive functional relation, speech function, assumption, overall semantic structure, and genre) and recurring ideas and manifestations of each one (legitimation, style, modality, social actor, and hyponymy). This then discussed and explained the significance of looking at NSM not as individual entities, but as a whole by situating the protest speeches in a dominant-dominated discourse. The analyses show that the speakers reflect on and present their personal and collective experiences as students and as part of the education sector when discussing about the various issues that motivate the protest. It also discusses how these issues are interrelated to education and emphasizes on the significance of magnifying on the perspective of the dominated in addressing it. Moreover, this study highlights the dichotomy between NSM education and the current neoliberal style of education in the country and highlights the need for an education reform in order to make education in the Philippines truly free and accessible for everyone.
