Abstract

This research analyzed and evaluated the current entrepreneurial mindset of high-value crop farmers in Majayjay, Laguna. High-value crop farmers were chosen since these crops provide higher net returns per hectare and there is a government program specifically targeted to these farmers and their crops. High-value crops are usually as tomato, cucumber, bitter gourd, sweet potato, snap beans, and hot pepper. The entrepreneurial mindset of farmers was evaluated by identifying the present entrepreneurial competencies that these respondents may possess. The evaluation also included the identification of the presence and impact of barriers to entrepreneurship that may have affected the status and level of entrepreneurial competencies and mindset of farmers. Respondents were chosen in random from the high-value crops farmer master list of Majayjay and was contacted one by one.

Methods of analysis include thematic analysis using their answers during the phone call interview. Five farmers from Barangay Piit were able to participate and answer the questions. The answers during the interview were transformed into codes and themes that the researcher used to evaluate the entrepreneurial mindset of high-value crop farmers. All of the transcriptions can be seen in the appendices and a summary of the transcriptions can be found in the results and discussion part. Results of the interview showed that the farmers’ current entrepreneurial mindset is affected by factors such as budget, crop type, season, market prices, and information reliability. These factors limit the farmer’s entrepreneurial competencies. Meanwhile, barriers to entrepreneurship were barely present but the farmers fail to maximize these opportunities due to the lack of initiative, the lack of accessibility, the lack of awareness, and their low bargaining power.

The research finds the respondents to possess an entrepreneurial mindset but is suppressed due to limiting factors that these respondents must adjust to. The factors were used to formulate recommendations that may help farmers maximize and tap the potential of their entrepreneurial mindset.

Recommendations focused on providing online or offline on-site advice and recommendations tailored for the farmers and their farm situation. There is also a recommendation for the enhancement of the current high-value crop program. Centralized price list which would provide a reliable pricing list that could be the basis for transactions and to maximize farm finances. Pre-recorded advice and recommendation for farmers aimed to provide reliable farming tips and advice addressed to younger farmers who mostly rely on the internet. Lastly, business-to-business transactions focus on connecting farmers to buyers or businesses that provide better pricing offers for their produce.
