Abstract

The study was designed to present and analyze the business model canvas of three engineered bamboo manufacturers in selected areas of Luzon. It attempts to: 1) present the profile, and history of the e-bamboo enterprises; 2) describe the business models and production of engineered bamboo products; 3) analyze the external factors and internal factors affecting the sustainability of the enterprises; and, 4) formulate strategies for which would enable the producers to tap opportunities and to allow them to counteract the threats gathered from the interview.

Among the industry players in Luzon, three (3) enterprises were covered in the study namely: CS First Green Agro-Industrial Inc., Cardona Multi-Purpose Cooperative, and Cabaluyan 2nd Bamboo Growers and Manufacturers Association. Both primary and secondary data were used in the study. The researcher fundamentally used descriptive method in the analysis of data. The business model canvas, problem analysis, and the SWOT analysis were used as tools in analyzing the data.

CS First Green Aidi was managed by a private company, Cardona Multi-Purpose Cooperative, by a cooperative, and CB Bamboo, an association. These three producers were identified based on the size of the assets and enterprise with CS First being the largescale player, CMPC as the medium player, and CB Bamboo as the small-scale player. As per the business models canvas presented in the research, it was evident that there are five (5) areas with differences among the nine (9) components of the canvas. These areas include key partners, key activities, value proposition, customer segment and the revenue streams. The key partners in the case of CS First were Strategic Holding Inc., the Department of Trade and Industry, and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources. On the other hand, in the case of the Cardona Multi-Purpose Cooperative and the Cabaluyan 2nd Bamboo Growers Association, they both had the Department of Trade and Industry as their key partner. In terms of the key activities, both the Cabaluyan 2nd and the Cardona cooperative produced engineered bamboo products while the CS First AIDI conducted continuous research and development, established plantations, and conducted product diversification. In terms of customer segments, the subject enterprises catered to different market segments; CS First AIDI to institutional buyers and government offices, and both Cardona Multi-Purpose Cooperative and the Cabaluyan 2nd Bamboo Growers and Manufacturers to almost the same market segment which consisted of individual buyers, students, government agencies, and other private companies. Further, the Cabaluyan 2nd has a more intensive distribution channel among the enterprises, that is the association used social media as a means of direct selling in addition to the traditional method which is practiced by the other two enterprises. Lastly, the revenue streams of the Cabaluyan 2nd includes fees from the laser engraving and infrared printing services they offered.

The assessment showed which areas of the enterprise were functioning well and which business model canvas blocks were clearly defined. The enterprise with the least problems in terms of the functional areas and the business model canvas was the Cabaluyan 2nd Bamboo Growers and Manufacturers Association. Meanwhile, among the three enterprises, CB Bamboo had the most clearly defined business model canvas (which utilized promotional tools and marketing channels). Both CS First Green AIDI and the Cardona Multi-Purpose Cooperative had underutilized customer relationships and channels. Relative to the business functions, minor problems were hindering the growth of the business including the lack of manpower for CS First and the high rate of absenteeism for CMPC.

The researcher formulated recommendations for each player. It was recommended that the Cabaluyan 2nd Bamboo Growers and Manufacturers Association expand its operations. Based on observation, the land area owned by the association could accommodate the expansion of the facility and can pave the way for more efficient operations. As for the Cardona Multi-Purpose Cooperative, it was recommended that it utilize the online marketplace to sell its products and also to partner with a company or individual specializing in marketing. Lastly, for CS First Green AIDI, it was recommended that it explore having a partnership with funding agencies in order to increase its productivity.
