Abstract

Aceto-carmine squash preparations of the flower buds of the whole spikes of pansit-pansitan, Peperomia pellucida (L.) H.B.K. which were fixed in Carnoy's solution between 11:00 and 11:45 a.m. revealed the reductional Meiosis 1 stages and equational Meiosis II stages. Nuclear chromatin and chromosomes exhibited peculiar 'stickiness or diffused state' which caused the occurrence of odd configurations and behavior such as noncongression, early disjunction, laggards, loose pairings, chains and rings during the different stages of meiosis. Varying bivalent counts ranged from 11 to 24 or chromosome numbers of n = 11 (2n = 22) to n = 24 (2n = 48) but the conventional behavior was observed during Telophases and II stages of P. pellucida. Modal chromosome number of P. pellucida was n = 11 (2n = 22). Meiotic index of P. pellucida was 13.70% and its pollen fertility was 48.24%
