Abstract

The students’ competent in matric system conversion using a simplified method was developed in the study. Numbers were associated with the prefixes to the units of length, weight, and capacity, for the prefixes milli the number 0 was associated, for centi the number I, for deci the number 2, for metre/ gram/litre the number 3, for deka the number 4, for hector the number 5 and for kilo the number 6. The simplified method used the formula.

LUM – HUM = Resultant in converting lower unit of measure to highest unit measure and

LUM – HUM = Resultant in converting higher unit of measure to lower unit measure. In the formula LUM is the number associated with the lower unit of measure and HUM is the number associated with the higher unit of measure. The negative resultant obtained indicated that the decimal point should be moved to the left equal to the value of the resultant and the positive resultant indicated that the decimal point should be moved to the right equal to the value of the resultant. A similar method of conversion was devised for measurement of areas and volume on square units and cubic units respectively.
